Five2Watch: Winter

For #Five2Watch this week we've selected five artists whose work reminded us of the winter months and festive season: Tim Pugh, Lorna Johnson, Caroline Watson, Corey Whyte and Stuart Dodman.

"Snowball Suspense ", 2018

Tim Pugh

The temporary installation was created at the top of Dent Hill near Cleator Moor in West Cumbria in January 2018. I choose the location due to its sheltered position from the wind and because of the vivid contrast between the snowballs and green conifer branches. The snowballs were randomly positioned and balanced on the branches and frustratingly kept falling off due to increasing breezes. Heavy rain suddenly set in and numbed my fingers to the bone and I managed to take just a few photographs before I was forced off the hill due to the bad weather.

Binding time (a winter hoard), 2016

Lorna Johnson

Over the course of the official autumn harvest time (22 Sept – 22 Dec) I began to build a winter stock, a natural hoard of fragments of wood, collected on my daily walks that have now become a regular part of my mothering routine.

Finding, collecting, sorting and binding – a productive hoarding process that felt very fitting with my current lifestyle and the maternity time I gave to building a piece and really enjoying its production – the slow mindful build

On the 22 Dec this winter hoard began to be used via Instagram – over the course of winter this 91 piece collection was made visible, bringing the viewer through to spring.
