Artist Statement

At the core of my work is a desire to record tension, gravity and energy flow through strong line and distinct form. Conceptually I draw on man’s complex relationship with nature and merge these ideas with the qualities and limits of the material. Recent work looks at theories of light and gravity as presented by physicists and how these affect our perception of natural forces. Materials such as glass, paper and plastic allow me to work with elasticity, transparency and light in expressing the energy present in constructed form. There is a distinctive element of self-forming in my processes, adding a sense of spontaneity and movement to the work. Other processes incorporate periods of research into scientific concepts, collaboration or site-specific work. My practice includes sculpture, installation, photography and printmaking and I have an MA Art and Science from UAL Central Saint Martins London (2018) and I was artist in residence at Mullard Space Science Laboratory (UCL) from 2018-2019. At my studio in Surrey, I teach glass-making courses and have completed public and private commissions, including for the National Trust and private building developments. My work is in private collections in the UK and internationally and in 2017 I won the Installation Category for the National Open Art Prize.
