Artist Statement

My work investigates the paths and patterns of timelines and connections, the synchronicity and randomness of existence; the chaos and coincidence amidst the 7 billion. I chart elements of my life, via pivotal points and the human connections I have made along the way. By plotting an axis of existence, almost as a ship would plot its course, I am creating abstract patterns of life. I am charting the synchronicity, the closeness, the continuity of connections to others over time. Numerology, layers and secret codes are charted and sewn together by threads to visually plot a graph of existence. I use silk threads as a drawing medium to tie up connections. I also use threads as pigment, line and form - plotting the charts and maps of coincidence into precision abstractions. I also question the notion of what is drawing and investigate new materials working together by using the medium of sewing through paper. From a distance people have often mistaken the line forms to be from either pen or pencil and it is only upon closer inspection that they have seen the use of silk threads sewn through the paper to create linear forms. The threads become the mark makers, the drawing tools, the colour and shape. I employ collage elements with old maps and graph paper - historical and scientific processes which are all reliant upon drawing to create something else.
